PARLIAMENT. [BY TELEGRAPH.-PRESS ASSOCIATION.] HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
Wellington, Last Night. The House met at 7.30. Mr Pilliett was introduced by Sir G. Grey and Mr Wynne-Williams, and took his seat for Stanmore. Mr Pyke resumed the debate on the Land Bill, which he -warmly supported as a most valuable measure. Mr HtJKSTiiousK complimented the Ministry for their very elastic land law. If settlement was really to be advanced, to place the people on- the land was the first duty of the Legislature. He did not think the deferred payment settler required relief at present. He thought a longer tenure should be given for forest land than for open land. Mr Pkkous thought the bill would greatly facilitate settlement on the land. He held that the deferred payment system had been a success rather than a failure, and that an extension of it, combined with the leasing proposals, would be very valuable. Several portions of the bill required attention in committee. _ Mr Weston spoke strongly against the bill, and generally criticised its provisions at considerable length. [Left sitting.]
