THE CAMBRIDGE RAILWAY STATION SITE.

The action of the Government in the matter of taking the ground under the Public Works Act for the railway station site at Cambridge Avas freely discussed at a meeting of the town board held on Monday evening last. The subject was introduced by the chairman (Mr Wells), who in illustration of his sentiments on the matter read an article which appeared in The Waikato Times on Thursday last. He contended it was very unwise parsimony on the part of the Government, to only take half of allotments 411, 418, leaving for station purposes, but one-and-a-half chains, the other chain having to be appropriated for road purposes. At the present time they could have the entire allotments at a reasonable figure, there being only one house erected, and this would suit the accommodation of the stationmaster. If they did not take this ground now, they would discover their mistake in the course of a few years, when the development of the place would , necessitate increased station accommodation, and when the ground which they wished to annex was covered with buildings, and thus materially enhanced in value. It was a physical impossibility to extend the ground in any other direction, on account of the extensive gully which constituted the other boundary. Cr. Johnson thought the Presbyterian Church ground was a suitable site for the station. — Cr. Nixon did not coincide with the views of the chairman. He did not see why the board should interfere between the Government and private interest. If a private company was taking in hand the construction of this railway, they would, he could assure them, buy up the entire block. — Cr. Kirkwood coincided with the views of the chairman, and moved " That in the opinion of the board it is desirable in the public interest that the Public Works Department take the whole of sections 411 to 418 for the rail-way-station site, and that the chairman communicate through the member for the district to the Hon. the Minister for Public Works, requesting him to give effect to this recommendation. — Cr. Hewitt seconded the motion, which was carried.
