HAMILTON LADIES' BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.

The annual meeting of the above society "was 'held in "the ;Court-houae yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock. His Worship the Mayor was voted to the chair, and in referring to the object of the institution, he thought the best course to pursue would be to read the? president's report, winch would give more information iv connection, with the working and benefits accorded by the society than was at his disposal. He then read the report, which was as follows :—: — Rtpoiu 01 rue Hamilion Ladies' BfcNKVoMNI SOCII.II, TOR HIE YLAR LMMNC, JULY, 1382 :— In laying before the public the third annual report of the woi king of this society, the committee beg to call attention to the great decrease of subcriptions and consequent restriction of expenditure from previous yoars In 1880, the subscription amounted to ,£6l 2s (3d, and the expenditure to £60 11s lQs. In 1881. the subscriptions were £28 Is, and the expenditure £27 9s, and in the piesent year the subscriptions amount' to only £15 13s Od, and the expenditure to £11 16s lid, leaving a balance to the credit of the society of .^3 16s 7d. During the year tourteen cases have been Relieved and supplied with medicines, groceries, meat, and other necessaries, and furthei assisted bj the loan of bedding, clothing, and vanous other articles rjuicbascd durinjj the first year of the society, and which have materially contributed to itsusofulness. Medical comforts left over from last } ear, have been supplied in six cases, two of whom are dead, and the other tour convalescent, and the bale of linen has been useful to many at a time when they could not have obtained assistance in any other way. The committee beg to tender their thanks to Dr Beale tor the kind and gratuituous assistac^be he has given in attending patients for the society. They have also to c.\press their regiet at losing the sei vices ot their late president, Mrs Calder, uho left for the Thames in December last. It appcais to the committee that the society is as liLcessary as cv«r in oider that someoiganisation may be available and competent to deal with eases of illness and destitution which will arise, and which would otherwise be either entirclj neglec ted or have to be relieved b> public subscription. Tliej therefore hope that the socletj will n't Dive morn gcneial support so that its useiulness maj be increased. Ai>\n Jlumi , lor the Committee Ihe e\prn<luuie lor the present je.ir has been as follow^. — Giocories and proxisions, £1 17s lid ; mc.it, £11 9 sod, nursing, £l lBs; medicines, £2 14s 9d : sun.'i tes, £6 7s. Condi mud — jon\ Ivno\, Chairman. 11l vetciTiug to the repot t His Worship said — Ladies and Gentlemen, — You will agree that the lepoit is satisfactoiy in one sense, but very unsatisfactory in another. He pointed out the want of support accorded the society. There was no doubt that an institution of this kind was a most desnable oue; it gave the means and provided the funds foi alleviating cases ot sickness and destitution which otherwise would be ovei looked 01 would fall entirely upon a few of the known charitably-disposed of our citizens. He trusted that the ladies who had kept this institution going dm ing the past twelve months would be gratified in the ensuing twelve months with a much moie generous support than they had met with fiom the residents of Hamilton during the past year. His Woiship then moved " That the president's report and balance-sheet be adopted." This was second by Mr R. F. Sandes and earned. The ne.\t business before the meeting was the election ot a new committee. The folloM ing were the ladies chosen as a committee foi the ensuing year: — Mis Lti^h, picsident ; Mesdamos Jolly. Searancke, McUoveru, Gwynne, and Mis& Clntty. The Mayor desired before paiting, to move, " That a coidial \ otu ot thanko be accorded to the outgoing committee foi the faithful manner in which the work had been canied on by them dming then Lei in ot oilice. Mr Sandes, in seconding the pioposition, thought they had now a good opportunity of making any suggestions which might be of benefit to the society. The lames piesent gencially oxpiesscd a wish that moie geneial inU'le&t should be taken in the society, and said that subset iptions, however small, would be thankfully icceived.
