LATEST AUCKLAND NEWS. [BY TELEGRAPH. — OWN CORREPONDENT.]

Auckland, Last Night. The increased demand and higher price of timber in Australia is causing great activity at the sawmills. A large freehold property in Karanghape "Road, owned by David Grubb, baker, was offered for sale to-day. Bidding rose steadily to £3,200, at which price the property was passed, the reserve being above this figure. Superintendent Thompson leaves for the Thames this evening to enquire into the charges preferred by Detective Farrell against Sergeant G-'Grady. A fire at Joseph Freeman's farm, Papatoitoi destroyed his office. Traps, harness, &c, were insured for £190 in the New Zealand office. It is a singular fact that the property in question was to have been sold by public auctipn to-day, Freeman being about to proceed to Europe. The cause of the fire is unknown.

The Mines. The Premier, Waitaki, Werahiko, and other mines, are looking well for good yields, and the battery is progressing, The gale on Saturday night blew down the frame-work of the battery house, and demolished a store in course of erection on section 13, for Wilson, draper, the store was nearly finished at the time. No damage was done to Te Aroha township. *
