PUBLIC MEETING A T HAMILTON. — THE ARMED CONSTABULARY.

A meeting of the Hamilton public wai helfl laofc night, in the Borough Council Chambers, to consider the matter of distributing the Armed Constabulary, now stationed at Cambridge, throughout the diitiict, His Worship the Major was in the chair, and there was a good attendance. The Mayor, in opening the meeting read the following telegram, which he had sent to the member for the district, Mr F. A. Whitaker :-" Very great dissatisfaction is expressed throughout the district, at attempt to monopolise constabulary in Cambridge. At least 50 should be stationed ab Hamiltou : the other places in like proportion — John Knox." The following was Mr Whitaker's reply :—": — " Have laid matter oi constabulary before Mr Bryce. Will do all I can. Men go to roads again in eight days." The Chairman said, that a munber of the men had been sent to Alexandra, Kihikihi, and Te Awamutn, but Hamilton had been left out in the cold. He thought ample accomodation could be found in Hamilton for a fair proportion. — Mr Sandes said he had had an interview with Col. Lyou on the matter, and he was perfectly satisfied that a number of his men should be forwarded on to Hamilton. If the Defence Minister were agreeable the men would be sent. Foity had been sent to Alexandra and fifteen to Kihikihi, leaving 180 men still at Cambridge, where there was ho house accommodation whatever. — The Chairman suggested the Oddfellow's Hall as a tempo-, rary bariack-room. — Mr dimming olFeicd the use of the Oddfellow's Hall for 10a a week, together with the use of two other buildings of his own, for nothing. He lemarked that it was for the business men of Hamilton to pay the rent. He himself would give 2s 6d weekly. —It was suggested that having secured house accommodation, their next consideration was cooking accommodation, which would be a further expense to be provided ior. — The Chairman estimated that to make provision for cooking would cost JCIO extra, which they would likewise have to provided for.— lt was resolved that the Mayor, Messrs Sandes, Cumming, and the mover, be appoiuted a deputation to wait on Col. Lyon on the matter, and that the Colonel be requested to meet the deputation at the Hamilton Hotel, at 12 o'clock to-day, and also that accommodation be offered for 100 jmen. — Carried. The meeting then terminated.
