RAILWAY MANAGEMENT.

TO THJJ EDITOR. Slit, — I see a letter on this subject from E.J.M, iii your issue of the 13th inst. In it he states *' there is a continual giowl kept up through the papers on account of the present management of our railways," and continues "Now, Mr Editor, if the railways aie really mismanaged." lie gives the evidence of dissatisfaction in the first sentence, and then in the second doubts if there is any cause for it. He suggests as a remedy that the Mayor of Hamilton should call a meeting to lay out a scheme for working the line. I cannot see that that would remedy the matter, for the complaints appear to be principally from those located lower down the river, who would nob be likely to attend such meeting. Again ho says "I think it would be a most unmanly thing for anyone to be continually writing, harping, and picking at him. ' Now what have those to do who feel injured but to state theit grievances in the papers, and suggest improvements, more especially at the present moment when we read that Mr Hobbs lias asked in Parliament for an enquiry to be made into the present system of working the line ? I will give another instance to the many already chaiged against the management, When the rates of traffic are gazetted there is no time given how long these rates are to be in force, whether for the quarter, half year, or year. There have even been instances where they were changed during the month. Anyone accustomed to business must see the disadvantage of this at a glance, for how could anyone contract to deliver material or goods of any kind at any given rate when the tariff might be altered to suit any whim of the manager whenever he felt inclined. Again when these rates come out in the Gazette they are complicated with their parcel rate, special rate, and rates on all the different classes of goods from Ato N. Would not an "able" manager have them published in pamphlet form, obtainable at cvci y station at a cheap rate, and might not the time-table either be included or published scperately and obtainable in the same manner ? — I am, &c, Business.
