TUKSDAY. THE GOVERNOR'S LKAVJS OF ABSENCE. Mr Rollh^ton made an announcement similar to that by the Piomiev in tho council. QUESTIOX.3. Replying to questions it was stated :—: — That the Government would not amend the Representation Act so as to extend the franchise to seamen afloat, so as to enable them to exercise the same in their respective districts.— An amendment would be made in the Land Act to enable deferred payment settlers to take up a further section of land under the same scheme. — The i % eserves for the education of Maori children at Taupiri and Te Awamutu were under the control of the Church Missionary Society, and the Government had nothing to do with their administration. In one instance, these reserves, it was known, were leased at a ' rental of £100 per annum. — That, at the close of the session, the Native Minister would meet Tawhiao and Rewi at Auckland, for the purpose of settling the diffi- ', , culties with the natives re the King country. NEW BILLS. The following bills were introduced and read a first time : — To amend the —Taranaki Iron Smelting Works Land , Act, 187 i; to amend . the Dunedin - Reserves Management ' Ordinance, 1867 • (Mr Fish) ; the Lyttelton 'Harbour Board (Mr Wright) ; to increase" the representatiou'of'the Maori people in the House of
Representatives in New Zealand (Mr Hobbs); the Mines Act, 1877, Amendment (Mr de Lautour); to regulate the width of streets and roadß (Mr J. W. Thomson).
lIANSAED. Mr Feldwick moved, " That the report of the Reporting Debates Committee recommending the issue of a daily San&ard should be adopted." Sir J. Hall moved as an amendment, " That the issue be four times a week." No opportunity would, under the daily issue, be afforded members for correcting their speeches, and he objected to have their speeches to go forth to the public as the authorised vcrson uncorrected' Mr de Lautour supported, and Messrs Whitakkh, and Hutciiinson opposed the motion, which was lost by 52 to 20. Sir John Hall's amendment was lost by 43 to 28, and the debate on Mr Macandrew's amendment to discontinue the gratuitous issue of Hansard was interrupted for the following purpose :—: —
FINANOIAL STATEMENT. Mr Rolleston stated that in consequence of the continued indisposition of Major Atkinson the Financial Statement would not be made that evening. So far as they could sec it would not be delivered till Friday.
PUBLIC WORKS STATEMENT. In reply to Mr Montgomery Mr Johnstone said he expected to be able to state on Friday when he would be able to make the Public Works Statement. He hoped it would be some day next week.
WAIKATO CONFISCATED LANDh. Mr Bryce moved the second reading of the Waikato Confiscated Lands Bill. Mr SiiEiniAN supported the motion, believing that it would wipe out the last trace of the native difficulty in the Waikato. Mr Wiiitaker hoped the Government would see that nothing in the bill would be detrimental to the interests of the settlers. Sir G. Grey, Major Te Wheoro, and Mr T vwhai supported the bill. The motion was carried.
BILLS ADVANCED. The Trade-marks Act Amendment Bill, and the Public Works Bill wore read a second time, and the House went into Committee on the Industrial School Bill, which was passed through, and reported with verbal amendments.
