THE RUAPUKE SCHOOLMASTER.

TO TIIK EDITOR. Sir, — Certain discontented and unprincipled people in Ruapuke district have recently been trying their utmost to injure our most respected schoolmaster, Mr Johnston e, by trying to prove him to be an "incompetent teacher," but let us hope before long they will see the folly of their unjust accusation, more especially when they remember that "non-attendance" at school, and not "bad teaching," is the main reason for some of their children not piogressing as satisfactorily as expected. Whose fault is this, the parent's or the schoolmaster's ? Mr Johnstouehas been a schoolmaster for many years, and has always been a most popular man in public as well as in private life, and there is no doubt that in his present position he is " the right man in the right place," and the majority of settlers around Te Mata and Ruapuke, esteem him as a true friend and seem thoroughly satisfied with his abilities as a schoolmaster and the progress of their children while under hia care ; but on the other hand, there are a few (very few, I am happy to say), who despise Mr Johnstone, and are always "ready to do him harm, merely because he is a just and honorable man walking in the ways of God, trusting to "Him" rather than "them," and I do sincerely hope that Mr Johnstone's friends will not allow him to be trodden in the dust, but will be manly enough to stand by one who has indeed served, them faithfully and well. — I am, &c, An Honorable Man.

A kioh Frenchman who had a desire to know how, a camel roast would taste paid £1000 for an animal to get his roast from. It tasted like beef. A fashion writer says : ' Short skirts axe de "rifftieur for dancing.' By this a gii-1 will know how* to riguersett for a bjuli-i-New Origans lieaymw / ,ni.
