THE OHINEMURI OUTRAGE.

At the Auckland Police Court on Thursday, before Mr R. C. Barstow, J.P., Pakara to Paora and EpihaTahiwerecharged with that they did feloniously and wilfully, and of malice aforethought, feloniously shoot at, and wound, "William Francis Me Williams, with intent to kill him, at Rotokohu, on the 29th of August, 1579. Mr Brown was sworn interpreter, and read the charge to the accused, for whom Mr Dufaur appeared, and stated they requested him to state that they denied the charge. The case having been opened by Mr Pardy, the evidence of Messrs Me Williams and Powdrell was taken to prove the circumstance of the shooting, which occurred while the witnesses were engaged cutting lines for a survey near Rotokohu. Dr. Payne, Surgeon of the Thames Hospital, deposed to the dangerous nature of the wounds inflicted on McWilliams. Judge Puckey, formerly Native Commissioner at the Thames, and Mr Wilkinson, the present Native Agent at the same place, deposed to a demand having been made to the chiefs for the surrender of the perpetrators. They also gave evidence to show that Eipha had admitted his share in the shooting, and thatPakara had never denied having taken part in the outrage. The evidence of Sergt. McGovern, and Mr Quick, interpreter, having been taken, relative to the arrest of the prisoners, the latter were committed to take their trial at the next criminal sitting of the Supreme Court, bail being refused.
