THE WAIKATO-TE ARO HA ROAD.
Stoppage of the Coach. The road to Te Aroha is just now in a most deplorable condition, more particularly that portion between Morrmsville and Waitoa, running across Goulds swamp. At this point, owing partly to the late heavy rains and in part to the drainage operations going on, the roadway is now literally impassable. Seveial drays and waggons have stuck in the mud and cannot be extricated except by dint of considerable labor, the result being that vehicles cannot pass. The Aroha mail coach was stuck up there yesterday, and the driver, Mr Faulkner, had to ride into Hamilton with the mails. Last night be proceeded to Cambridge to consult with his employer, Mr W. K. Carter, on the course proper to pursue in the circumstances.
Other Damages. The heavy downfall of rain has done much damage on other parts of the road, and at other places in the Waitoa district. One of the creeks near Missen's, known as the Puranui, has overflowed the roadway, cutting a deep rut, almost a ditch, across it. The stop-bank on the Agricultural Company's estate on the Waitoa has again broken away, and the low-lying swamp land below is entirely flooded. The Waihou has risen very much, and some difficulty is experienced in crossing. Altogether the state of matters is deplorable in the extreme^ So far aa the road is concerned, the local bodies are not in a position to spend much money on it, but being a main road over , which the .mails are carried, assistance might very reasonably be asked from the Government. If the position were put plainly before them, We have no doubt a grant sufficient to meet present requirements would be made.
