Whatiwhatihoe, Alexandra, 15th May, 1882.— To Su George Grey, greeting-,— On the 13th day of this month Tawhiao made known his opinions to the meeting at Whatiwhatihoc. You may have seen his speeches in the newspapcis. He spoke \\ ith reference to bringing the Parliament to Auckland, so that we might also be able to join m. This is the meaning. It was not that the whole Parliament should come, but that be selected by the Parliament, and power given to them to intorm us of the intentions of you Europeans towards us Maoris, such persons to iorm a Parliament at Auckland, so that we could go there, to Auckland, on the day appointed, and could deliberate together with the said Parliament as to the best means of settling all troubles existing between the two laces. I now ask that by this means oue tree will grow, that is the tree we planted at Waitara. Peihaps our wishes that the troubles between Maons and Euroshould cease may thus be fulfilled, and that we may leave the two i.m cs in prosperity love, and tranqmlity. We look to you to bclncnd us in this work, foi you know us, and our wishes, and our customs, because jou are not of to-daj No, jou were in my day, and in the days of the elders who have passed away, and we aie few who now lemain. Another reason why we look to you is as youis wcic the gre.Tt works in the island. Friend, Sir G. Grey, do you lay this before your Pail lament, and may it be "carefully considered by you all. — Sufficient, from your friend, Rlwi Maxjapoio.
