SCIENCE v. THE BIBLE.
TO TJIE EDITOR. Sir,— As I see by the papers that a Church of England bishop belonging to one of the other colonies, when asked to pray for rain, stated as his reason for .refusal that were he to do so scientific men would Jaugh at him. Now, Mr Editor, I always ' understood that gentlemen had always to go through a course of Latin before they were eligible for clergymen ; if so, I, would, like to call thfi learned gentleman's attention to tlie following passage from Cicero :—D'd immovtales. audivenmt incus pvc'ccs. And surely; Mr Editor, if He condescends to hear them, in no case will He fail > to answer, them. , If the learned T ,bishpp!s ideas were' right, there M'oxUd 'tie iio use for so'me 1 '6f us,at least tb'pr%"'-as v we wight pot have t^e kuowle'dge to mk fa*'
those things which, our Maker would grant. The next thing we may expect from the rev. gentleman will be a statement that it is useless to pray at all, and the reason lie might give would be Fatum rrffit homines. Could the rev. gentleman tell me which jpart of my prayer-book I am to teach my children as being right, and which wrong ? I also beg to refer anyone of ihe same opinions to the fifth chapter of James, 17-J 8 verses. "Elias was a man, subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain, and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit." — I am, etc. ; Fides in Precks. P.S. — I am prepared to meet auy Anglican clergyman on the above subject and fi^lit the matter out, "Science versus the Bible," that is the English translation, as I am not sufficiently up in Greek to go into that.— F.
