CORRESPONDENCE. SYDNEY SQUARE, HAMILTON.
TO THK bfilTOU. Sik — A few words in reply to Messrs Han is and dimming n the Squ.aru. Mr Han is' lettei is apt to mislead the general pubhu. What he &ayh about being a mcnibei of the Woi l»t> Committee, Boiough Council, is correct, but I beg to say that after Mr Harii^ was compelled to resign his beat in the council he still continued to act as a member of committee, and interfeicd on nioic than one occasion in the matter. Jn fact he was at it up to the veij last, as he m ell knows. My statement that he in conjunction with the othoisoues mo the money is pnfecth/ true, as Mr Han is may yet find out, but, the \u>ik being done, of coui&e it matteis not to him whether the con ti actor gets his just dues or not. As for Mr Cumminy'ss cfl'usion, it is simply a mass of asseitions \\ Inch aie about as concct as the one he made at a public meeting when lio said that the gcneial public had biibsci ibed CBO towards the work, and the Borough Conned £20, a statement palpably wrong. I say that I did complete the woik according to the plan, and the pi onf of this is that the borough ongineei ga* c a ceitifieate to that eft'eot, without which I should not have got the C3l) f lorn them. This Mr dimming knows well. Another thing ; Mr dimming lias never denied the liability, but has more than once promised to try and collect the moneys and pay inc. According to his statement ho must have more than enough in hand to settle up. Then why not do it ? Again, the number of horse teams supplied amounted only to about -C 4 10s, which would, of course, be allowed for, and finally I say that I have had to pay wages out of my own pocket to men employed by the committee to work on the Square. I have never been able to have a settlement of any sort or description, but have been quietly put off by the committee, who, having got their work done, tvy to slink out of their responsibilities in the way they have done. I shall write no more on the subject, my object having simply been to let the general public know the real facts of the case. Of course Mr dimming cares not whether the contract is settled up or not, so long as his property is benefited ; but I think it only right to let people know what sort of persons they may have to deal with when undertaking any work for such as the Sydney Square Committee. — I am, &c., T. G. Sasdes.
