TE AROHA. The Mines.
Pkkmikr. —In this mine, I find the low level tunnel li-is been duven a distance of 100 feet on the line of ieef, and all the quartz which has been carefully stacked at the mouth of the dmc, should, without doubt, crush exceedingly well. From the end of the tunnel, a crosscut is now being diiveu east with a \iew of breaking out on the eastern side of the ridge, which when accomplished will ofler better facilities for transmitting the crushing material to the mill ; 40 feet of tbc leef lcmaiiib intact until the above referred crosscut holes through, when it is proposed to send through it all the output fiom the mine. The We varies in widtli fiom 3 to ."> feet, with an underlay to the east, and course near or about N.K and S. West. A few feet to the west ef the present workings another lode has been clearly defined whilst clearing the surface quite lecently, the stone on the smface for a considerable distance showing bright coaise gold ; so it is shoitly intended by the manager to di ive west from the present w oi kings in order to ascertain what its character may be at a depth. Qukkv of Bkyvtv. — For some few weeks past the principal work consisted in stripping the reef, and so far their efforts have pi oved very i successful, the results showing on the cap of the lode, for a distance of 20ffc, quartz nicely streaked with the precious ore. The manager has now started a tunnel on the line of reef, in oi der to gefc good backs, and prove the lode, but something like a distance of 50 feet must be driven before getting vertically underneath the rock showing gold on the surface. Wkraiiiko.— The reef has just opened out to a width of five feet, containing gold from wall to wall. On Saturday evening last the manager brought to town some of the stone well studded with blight rich gold. Yooxg Colonial. — A new discovery, which may lead to important results, was come upon during the latter part, of last week, in the surface, not in tlie main reef, but what appears -to be a large branch lode, or paiallel reef, its relative position being about 30 feet west of the main reef and abreast of where the best prospects of the mine are procurable. During my visit the men employed were clearing the heavy bush surface from the cap of the reef, in order to more fully test the character of the discovery. Sufficient work, however, has not yet been done to form anything like a definite opinion of its course, size and underlay, but some of the. stone broken out shows small dabs, of coarse gold, so that it is intended when the weather will permit to trace and otherwise more fully develdp the newly found discovery.
The Battery. Early List week a portion of ,the Piako battery from Grahamatowii, en route for the Waiorongomai cveek, was lauded on the river bank, nearly opposite ,the^'battery site, Messrs. Price Bros, of th.c Thames, being the contractors for the ro-,, erection of the splendid plant, consisting of 40 head of stampers. The motive' power is to be turbine^ for which' good water rights have beeu secured, and already surveyed. Operations, in cutting out for the foundation, have been started. /The s.s. .Kotuku i 3 now steaming up the ■liver, probably with a further addition- of machinery. >■ i, ,_. -. v{ y ,'• , v l■> • '•• .
