CRICKET. . Oxford University Eleven v. Australian Eleven. THE AUSTRALIANS VICTORIOUS.
The first match of the Australian Eleven in England was commenced on Monday last at Oxford, against eleven University men. The weather was fine, and there was a large attendance of spectators throughout the match. The ground was in splendid condition, the wicket being lively. The Australians went in first, and the innings closed for 362. The following are the highest scorers : — Massie, caught, 206 ; Griffin, bowled, 19 ; Jones, caught, 39 ; Garrett, bowled, 41 ; Palmei', bowled, IS. Murdoch was bowled for 0. Massie batted splendidly, but was badly missed early in his innings. The batting of the Australians was much admired, and the fielding of the University players was excellent. At the close of the day's play the Oxford Eleven had two wickets down for 5 runs. The match was resumed on Tuesday, the home team continuing their first innings, which closed for a total of 189. Sharp contributed the highest score, 79. The University men followed on their second innings, and when stumps were drawn for the day had put together 119 for four wickets. The Australians met with a cordial reception on taking" the field. Their fowling and fielding were excellent, and both elicited much applause. The match was concluded on Wednesday, the University men scoring 225 in their second innings' j Robinson being the highest scorer with 55. The 1 Australians required 61 runs to win the match, and succeeded in obtaining, that number for* the 1 loss of only one wicket. The following ds the score : — Bannerman, bowled, 0 ; .
