HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the council was held on Monday evening. Present : — His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Jones, McGarrigle, Tippen, and Peat. — A letter was read from the Surveyor General's Office, Wellington, referring to a request made to the Premier (Mr Hall), when in Hamilton, that a standard survey of the town should be made. The writer said the Government was prepared to undertake the work during the coming winter on the usual terms, viz., the council to find pegs, &c, and pay half the cost of the survey. — The Mayor was of opinion that, considering the town had been surveyed by the Government, and done so badly, that the borough ought not to be put to any expense. — The letter was received pending the receipt of estimate of cost of the work. — Application was made by Mr A. Campbell for a culvert over the water channel opposite his property in Hamilton East. — The Mayor said they would have to make a decided stand against applications of tins sort, or the borough would not be able to bear the expense. — Cr. McGarrigle coincided with the Mayor, but as there were two useless culverts in Victoria-street about to be removed he had no objection to grauting the present application. — The letter was referred to the Works Committee, the Mayor dissenting. — A similar application was received from Mr N. R. Cox, Clarence-street. — Cr. Jones moved and Cr Peat seconded, "That the letter be referred to the Works Committee."— The Mayor demurred to giviug so much power into the hands of the Works Committee. — Cr. McGarrigle moved that consideration of the letter be postponed till next meeting. — This was seconded by the Mayor, but was lost on a division. Cr. Jones' motion Avas then put and carried. — The Town Clerk reported that the lease of portion of lot 411, Hamilton East, had that day been sold by auction to Mr William Sims, at a rental of £5 5s per annum. — The Mayor thought the price was very satisfactory. — Cr. Jones : I am told, Your Worship, that Mr Sims is going to make a gravel pit of the section. — The Mayor : There is nothing before the council about a gravel pit, and I cannot allow you to discuss the subject. — An influentially signed petition of the residents of Hamilton We«t, was presented praying the council to make the road known as Bernard-street, leading from Collingwoodstreet to the Domain lauds, passable. — Cr. Peat moved that the matter be referred to the Works Committee, to report, but at the suggestion of the Mayor he altered the motion to give the committee power to act, and it was then put and carried unanimously. — The Works Committee's report was read, dealing with various matters in the borough. They recommended the that footpath in Col-lingwood-street, north side, having been formed by Mr Hay, should be gravelled by the council. Adopted. They also recommended the council to re-consider the question of the Hood-street drains. Crs. McGarrigle and Tippen spoke against using puriri for the drain, and recommended bricks. The Mayor strongly advised the council to procure professional advice, and on the motion of Cr. Peat it was resolved that an engineer be engaged to draw out plans and prepare specifications for extending the present drain, and also to report on the drain across Anglesea-street. The report recommended, with regard to Mr Gaudin's 1 complaint about the water lying on his property in Collingwood-street, that the council place a pipe culvert under the footpath, provided Mr Gaudin will cut a drain along his fence, inside, to conduct the surface wator to the said pipes. This was agreed to, and it was resolved at the same time to place a pipe culvert under the footpath opposite the Court-house. It was also agreed to gravel portions of the footpath in Anglesea, Clarence, and Grantham-streets. — The Mayor wished 'to know by whose authority the footpath in Collingwood - street past * the Wesleyan Church had been gravelled. — Mr McGarrigle explained that authority had been given the Works Committee to repair the foot path,, but the borough workman had- evidently misunderstood his' instructions and gravelled the whole. — After com- | menting upon, the inability of the work, the'jfobtpath in question having been; in' giood order, it was agreed that in future' the |k borough workman r shonld have ■fyritteh instructions from the chairman of the ) ' Work's ' Compu^tee:^-The . f ollowing accounts were, passed t for :-^2'he; ' WMkato'* Times, ""18s 1 ; 'WiseinaV"f(do\g collars), :£1; lQs; . McGarrigle nloved tbat Firth-street, from Clyde-street to the Cambridge road, and Albert-street, from Firth-street to Galloway-street, be gravelled where required.—Cr. Tippeu spoke strongly in favor of the motion, which was passed, the work to be carried out by the Works Committee. — Cr. Peat drew attention to several matters requiring notice, such as the cemetery road, &c, which it was agreed should be embodied in the next report of the Works Committee — The Mayor reported that he had seen the member for Waipa, regarding the borough boundaries, and Mr Whitaker hid told him that as he had taken charge of the bill last session it was only fair that Mr Why te, who represented half the borough, should take it in hand this coming session, and he (Mr Whitaker) would support him to the utmost of his ability. A deputation of the council had accordingly waited on Mr Whyte. who had cheerfully agreed to take charge of the matter this year.— This was all the business and the council shortly after rose.
