HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the council was held on Monday evening, all the members being present. — After the trausacrion of some preliminary business, a letter was read from My W. M, Uay in reference to the gravelling pl'fdotpath in , Colliiigwoott-street. The letter was referred to the Works, Committee. — Mr JR. F. Sandes wrote , drawing the council's attention to the damage done by water overflowing the footpath in front of liis premised. ! After some considerable discussion with regard to the best outlet for the dfairfage of Victoria-street, it was decided to refer the matter to the Works Committee to bring up a report at next meeting. — An' application fiom Mr B. I—Ai — A report from the Works Committee on various, works' in the, Borough w,as read and after much discussion adopted. — The statement of funds was read as follows :— General account . (overdraft), £200 19s ; special fund account (credit), £164 16s 4d.— Crs. McGarrigle,, Bradley, Vialouj and Gaudin, and the Mayor were deputed to wait on the member for the district, previous to liis departure for Wellington, with reference to the borough boundaries. — The following tenders "wer6 received for drainage works iv Cook-street, Hamilton East : — W. Proctor, ££7 ; J. Smith, £34 12s 6d ; I. Coates, £32! 6s ; E. Wilson, £30 9s lid. Mr Wilson's tender was accepted. — A letter from Mr Coates, regarding the condition of a small biidge near Winter's, was referred to the Works Committee. — Mr X, Hill wrote tendering his resignation as a member of the council. The Mayor said he was sorry to see old Hamiltonians leaving the place. He was sure that the council would miss Mr Hill at that table. * He moved that the resignation be accepted with regret, and that a letter to that effect be sent to Mr HilK Tins was seconded by Cr. Peat, and carried unanimously.— An application from Messrs Qualtrough & White to have a box culvert placed in front of their premises was granted. — The borough workman wrote complaining that the Government engineer having taken possession of the store near the bridge for the purpose of storing paint, he was unable to get at the borough property kept there. He also rocomtneiidpcl that a supply of fascines be kept at the bridge approach for the purpose of repairing it as occasion re- , quired. — The Mayor looked upon the letter as a direct insult to himself. He had given the key of the stoic to the engineer, because a large quantity of valuable material to be used in painting the bridge was stored there. The borough workman could always obtain access by making application to the engineer. If he had any complaint to make, he should first of all have referred it to the chairman of the Works Committee or the Mayor. With regard to the recommendation as to a supply of ti-tree, he might repeat a suggestion which he had made on a former occasion, to the effect that Mr Peacock should be appointed consulting engineer to the borough. — several councillors expressed the opinion that Mr Peacock did not intend to reflect on the Mayor, out on the motion of Cr. Gaudin seconded by Cr. Bradley a resolution was carried not to receive the letter. — Cr. Vialou then moved that the borough property be kept in the stable adjoining the store, and that the borough workman procure a key for the door. This motion, failing to find a seconder, lapsed. — The committee appointed to enquire into the action of the bridge approach contractor in removing posts and rails, &c, reported that, haviug obtained legal advice, they were unanimously of" opinion that proceedings should be taken anainst Mr Booth for the recovery of the property removed by him. — On the motion ' of Cr. Gaudin, seconded by Cr. Jones, the report was adopted. — Cr. Jones wished the Mayor to repeat what he had said regarding him at a previous meeting, which he was prepared to answer. — The Mayor requested Cr. Jones to explain what he meant, or to 'make a resolution, and Cr. Jones not beiug prepared to take either the course was ruled out of order.— The, Mayoi' moved, in accordance with notice, that a sum of money sufficient to fence Sydney' Square be voted, and that the necessary steps be taken to vest the reserve in the Domain Boarcl. He pointed out the neee&sity for providing a recreation ground for the people of Hamilton, and impressed on the council th^ fact that the expense would be ' comparatively •small.— On the suggestion of Cr. Gaudin, who said the reserve was already the property of the people, the Mayor consented to strike out the latter part .of the motion, which' Cr. Gaudin then seconded. —Several councillors objected' to proceeding with the work on the, score of , expense, and, an amendment b'y C% Jones, seconded by Cr. Vialou, to the effect that the matter be left in abeyance 1 for* : the present, 1 was carried, the Mayor and 1 Cr. Gaudin only dissenting.— The Mayor gav.e notice that he would 'refer "the matter., to a public meeting of the' burgesses. — Cr. McGarrigle said he^wasj just, about, to move . that the matter be .laid before a public meeting, to be held on Monday next, at 7.30 p.m.— This was<, duly 5 seconded by Cr.
