A collision occuredralongside the wharf at seven o'clock this eveniug between the steamers Wakatu" and> Ladybird. The former was lying, alongside the^ wharf, and the latter was just coining in from Westport. The Ladybird had too much way on,},and before 'her speed could' "Be checked she struck the .Wakatu amiclship on starboard side, Cutting her down to the covering board* plates which ,were torn like paper ; both boats, along with the davits were smashed, wheels, -smashed to atoms, and steering gear put out of order. The ladies cabin was completely destroyed, as is also' the captaius cabin. The captain was lying down at the time the Wakatu wa^ struck, and had a narrow escape of being killed. The full extent of the damage done' to the Wakatu Avill not be ascertained until to-morrowj but it is stated that the repairs- Mill cost fully £106. ' The ouiy damage the Ladybird received was the breaking of her bobstay. It is stated that the order was given, before reaching the Wakatu to go astern, but the" engines vrere tfotjreversed in timej both anchors were let go, they however did, not check her. ,An enquiry will be held. "
