ALEXANDRA.

Since the late rains and consequent use of the river our township has a somewhat livlier aspect than usual, numbers of natives being enabled to bring down and dispose of their produce, our storekeepers 'being kept fairly busy. The new post and telegraph office is now finished and out of the hands of the contractor, Mr Henry Barker, who has made the best of a most unsuitable design, although of course preferable to the old tumble-down shanty hitherto provided for the use of the public. Mr (ientil the postmaster, will, I -am informed, take full possession during the week. « Mr McLean the contractor for the newbridge across the Waipa at Whatiwhatihoe, with a staff of workmen are here. All the timber is not as yet on the ground, but I am informed that the first pile will be driven on Wednesday or Thursday next, by Tawhiao. TheHon MrWhitaker had promised the King to be prwent and assist at the opening ceremony, but in consequence of the late unexpected political events, his presence on the occasion will be an almost impossibility. Our newly elected administrators of Local Government, the Commissioners of the Alexandra Town District, held thenfirst meeting on Friday last at the Public Hall when they elected, unanimously, MiThomas Finch, as chairman. Tawhiao also had a meeting with his advisers, on Friday, at Hauwai, TCopua, there were present : Wahanui, Te Tuhi, Honana, Taonui, and other chiefs. lam not fully acquainted with what took place, but are informed the Mokau Land Court, Bryce's visit to Rewi, and the forthcoming meeting were the topics shortly discussed. Rewi not being present, Wahanui proceeded to Puniu to consult witli him the following day (Saturday.) It appears now that the May meeting w ill not be so largely attended as expected, in consequence ot it being held so late in the season; the nights are now very cold, and a great number are excusing them selves. Repiesentatives however, of allthe tribes are expected to be present. Tawhiao himself is organising a large party to go pigeon shooting in Pirongia, the birds to be preserved for the meeting. I.noticod that Tawhiao proceeded to Kopua in full rig, on Friday, togged out with Henry Hardington's scarlet coat. How that coat reminds one of old times, and old identities, long passed away. I wish Henry had kept his coat. — (Own Correspondent, April 24th.)
