The Mines.
May Queen. — This claim was much spoken of last week, owing, it is said, to the discovery of good golden stone, which was forwarded to the town. As I have not visited the mine, I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the above, but consider the rumours to be well founded, inasmuch as some adjacent ground has been taken up during the latter part of last week. Diamond Gully.— On Saturday afternoon, what is generally supposed to be the reef, was picked up in the cross-cut tunnel. After the smoke cleared away from one of the last shots fired, good auriferous stone was met with. A few days' work, however, will be necessary to penetrate the country ahead before the character of the reef can be definitely decided upon. Immediately overhead the present workings splendid dish prospects of loose gold have been obtained, and some of the quartz when crushed and washed in the pan presents an excellent show. Youno Colonial. — Hitheito the country in the cross-cut level has proved slow work, as the ground was tight. Now, however, a better formation of good sandstone, with many quartz leaders, has made an appearance, and indications point to the mian lode before very long. Canadian 1 . — From the fiist of the field this claim has been involved in litigation, but as all the legal difficulties are now over, and men sent to work, we should certainly hear of something good from this property. The main leef is known to tiavei&o the entire length of the ground, and close to the northern boundary good payable stone has been found in the main reef, by the Young Colonial men.
