CAMBRIDGE TOWN BOARD.

The usual monthly, meetiug of the above body was held at the Town Board Office, Lake-street, on Tuesday evening last. There were present Messrs Thos Wells (chairman), Johnson and Nixou.

Mr Olementß' Claim. The Chairman said the board's defence had been registered disclaiming all liability in the matter of the claims of Messrs Rose and Clements, ' for the damage done to the former's business and the latter's property in Duke-street, Cambridge, by the action of the board in lowering the foot-path.

T wn District's Act. A lette was received from the Colonial Secretary, i" reference to the petition of local householders, praying to have the Town District's Act brought into force in the district, asking for a statutory declaration by the chairman, necessary to the granting of the prayer of the petition forwarded.— The Chairman said that in forwarding the petition to Wellington he did not think it was necessaryto annex a declaration, thinking the number of signatures offered, together with Mr Thomson's attestation, sufficient. The declaration had, however, been forwarded in accordance with the Colonial Secretary's letter.

The Karapiro Bridge. The following communication was received from the Assistant Under-Secre-tary for Public Works in reference to the above matter :—: — Public Works Office, Wellington, 31st March, 1882. Sir,— With reference to the deputation that waited on the Acting Minister tor Public Works, on his recent visit to Waikato, respecting a grant towards erection ol Karapiro bridge, lam now dircctcdJpTnfer'm you that the Government are willittrf rofctfntribute the sum of £^00 towards the rcouildtng of that bridge on being satisfied that the balance will be provided from local resources.—l have, &c, C. T. Ri.xzom, A.U.S. for Public AVorks. The Chairman stated that previous to the last monthly meeting of the County Council, Mr J. B. Whyte had receired a telegram from the Government, saying that £230 would be .granted for the work, the council to find the remainder. At the meeting of the council at which the telegram was considered, he (Mr Wells) had moved that the matter should be at once taken up, as it had been long in abeyance, and that instructions should be given to proceed with the work immediately. The council agreed to make up the balance of the money, and accordingly voted £330, specifically that they should be permitted to carry out the work. On a -previous occasion he had exerted himself to secure to the Town Board the carrying out of the work, but as the council were anxious to have the superintendence, he waived his claim. The work would probably have been under way had it not been for some slight error on the part of clerk of the council in applying tor the use of the plans and specifications as drawn up by the Government engineer, and promised by the Premier. .No specifications should have been asked for, as none had been drawn up, and consequently the mistake. He had no doubt, however, that the matter would be seen to at the next meeting of the council, and the work immediately entered upon. — In consideration of the hancUome grant of the Government, and the considerate action of the County Council, Mr Johnson proposed, " That the chairman be requested to write to the Minister of Public Works, thanking him tor the contribution of £400, as notified in his letter of 31st March, towards the cost of the erection of the Karapiro Bridge, and to inform him that the Waikato County Council had voted the balance of the money, and are about to proceed with its erection at once. Further to request him to forward the £400 to the credit of the council. Also to thank the Waikato Ceunty Coancil for their vote, and request them to proceed with the work.— Seconded by Mr Nixon and carried.
