PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL

The usual monthly meeting of the above council was held at the council chambers, Lake-street, Cambridge, at 2 o'clock, on Friday last. There were present : Crs. R. H D. Fergusson (chairman) W. P. Chepmell, H. E. Whitaker, G. E. Ellis, J. P. Campbell, and W. T. Firth. The usual preliminary business having been disposed of, the following telegram was read from Mr Benzoni, Assistant Undersecretary, to Mr H. E. Whitaker, Te Aroha, re a subsidy for goldh'elds :—: — AY ) our interview with the lion. Mr Hall, on subject of road from Aroha township to Aroha Goldfield, Mi Hall directs me to say that he has authorised expenditure of £500 on above road, and an agreement will be forwarded at once for signature of chairman of council with form of progress and ceitific.itc that no delay may take place in making payment. Money will be available on receipt of certificate. (Signed) — C. T. ]sen/oni, Assistant U.S. The following is a copy of memo laid on the table by Mr Whitaker, as received by him from the lion. Mr Holieston :—: — Government will subsidize the following works numbered 1, 2, 3, 5. ti),l r oot track to mine £g& 14s. (2) Pack track (&2to 35.) Waiorongomai creek road (£486). dj) Widening and extending pack track (£349). lo the extent of£Coo, on certificate forwarded by the warden that double the amount has been expended, such certificate to be accompanied by the county engineer's certificate as to tho natuic and value of the work done (Signed)— W. On the motion of Cr Ellis it was resolved " That the clerk write to the manager of the Bank of New Zealand, Cambridge, forwarding a copy of Mr Rolleston's memo, and Mr Benzoni's telegram, and apply for an overdraft to the extent of £1000, upon the securities of the promises contained therein." — Carried. — On the motion of Cr Whitaker it was resolved "That the chairman be empowered to take such steps as he may consider necessary to prevent any person 1 making a punt at Te Aroha without the consent of the council. "--Carried. — On the motion of Cr Fdrgusson it was resolved "That the offer of the Patetere Land and Settlement Company, to build two bridges upon the Cambridge-Oxford road, be accepted." — Carried. — On the motion of Cr Whitaker, it was resolved " That the application of Henry Buskerville for a slaughter-house Hc6nse be granted, subject to the site being approved of by Cr Whitaker." — Carried. — On the motion of Cr Chepmell, it was resolved "That the resolution passed at a special meeting of the council re bye-laws for the l'egulation' ot slaughter-houses within the county be confirmed."— Carried.— On the motion of Cr Whitaker, it was resolved "That the county engineer (Mr Purchas) be empowered to employ a surfaceman at Te Aroha during the winter months at a salary of £2 per week." — Carried. — On the motion of Cr Whitaker, it was resolved "That the amount expended by Mr Roche in improving and forming the road bounding his property to the north, be subsidised to the extent of 10s in the £." — Carried. — On the motion of Cr Whitaker, it was resolved "That the engineer be empowered, to expend a sum not exceeding £40 'in improving the water tables of the main roads in the Te Aroha township." — Carried. — Or , the motion -of Cr t t Whitaker, it was resolved " That a committee con-

sinting of any two councillors, be empowered to pay ( all accounts for coutract work, upon the same being certified to by the county engineer."— Carried.' — Oh the motion of Cr. , Whitaker it was resolved "That the, council apply by wire to the Minister of Public Works for the loan of light rails and sleepers sufficient for a tramway of about 2£ miles in length, from the Wairougomai Creek to the mines at Te Aroha." — Carried.— On the motion of Cr. Chepmell it was resolved "That during this year any person holding a slaughterhouse license not expiring until some time within, the year be allowed for such unexpired term." — Carried.— The clerk was instructed to write to ,the Minister of Justice, asking him to appoint the clerk of the R.M. Court at Te Aroha as clerk of the Lincensing Court for that district ; also to send tender and agreement re Waitoa bridge to be stamped ; also to get a county seal made at Teutenberg's, and to again write td Mr Buddie re rates.

Accounts. The following accounts were passed for payment :— Farrell and Erisor, £42 4s ; McCulloch, £70 ; A. Butler, , £66 7s 6d ; Chas. McLean, £60 ; H. Hyde, £7 6s 8d j Hetherington, 18s ; H. Smith, £2 8s ; Lavery and Whitehouse, £7 Is 5d , same, £2; same, £1 3s 6d ; Dwan, Bros., 9s; Jno. Gwynneth, £13 6s; Chas. Chitty, £3 10s. This was all the business.
