RECOVERY OF THE BODY. The Inquest; Tauranga, Yesterday.
Mr E. M. Edgcumbe, accompanied by a mounted constable and Mr Delaney, who is well acquainted with the coast, arrived at Maketu at noon yesterday. Prior to their arrival the body had been found by a native. Mr Edgcumbe sent the constable with a bullock dray, and brought the' ■ body to the court-house. It was' identified as that of the travelling reporter of the Timei, named John James Palmer. An inquest was held at Robertsons Hotel, before Mr E. M. Edgcumbe, J.P. In the absence of, direct evidence, a A r erdict of "Found drowned" was returned, the jury adding, as a rider, " That it is very desirable that, fiuger-pos.ts be erected on each side of the Waihi ford, and a third where the road branches off from Matata beach." The.coffin being ready, a grave was dug, arid the body, which had been in the water four days, being in a shockingly decomposed state, was interred at eight o'clock last night. All the Enropean residents in Maketu attended.
