VISIT OF MINISTERS TO WAIKATO.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Auckland, Last Night.
The hon. Major Atkinson and Messrs Bryce and Rolleston arrived in Hamilton on Thursday by the ordinary train from Auckland. They were accompanied by Mr J.O. Firth, Mr J.B.Pash, the representative of the Essex- farmers, and Mr Butler, private secretary to the Native Minister. Immediately on arrival the party proceeded to Cambridge in a special coach provided by Mr Carter. After spending an hour or so at Cambridge, they left for Mr Firth's estate at Matamata, it being understood that Messrs Bryce and Rolleston would proceed thence to Rotorua, while the Colonial Treasurer, after spending a day or two in Mr Firth's place, would return to Waikato. Circumstances must have arisen to alter these plans, as Major Atkinson and Mr Biyce left Matamata at 5 o'clock yesterday morning and reached Hamilton in time to catch the Auckland train. The cause of this sudden movement has naturally given rise to much speculation. Various conjectures were formed to account for what was felt to be a strange proceeding, but as the ways of Ministers are past finding out perhaps the wisest course to follow is to allow time to solve the problem. Mr Rolleston will adhere to bis original arrangement and proceed to Rotorua to join Mrs Rolleston, who has , been in the Lake district for some time.
The hon. F. Whitaker has received a- > telegram announcing that all the Ministers were returning to Auckland from Waikato. The cause is not. disclosed, Mr,Whicaker when asked said he had merely received a telegram, from them .that they were coming back to Auckland. It is believed here,; however, that some important message from the South is the reason of the altered programme. , ;
