The claim preferred by Brogden and Sons against the Government for £400,000, in respect of their immigration and railway construction contracts, came before Mr Justice Gillies at the Compensation Court to-day. No progress was, however made, His Honor raising the question whether or not he had jurisdiction. The point was argued at some length by counsel on both sides, and His Honor eventually reserved his decision until a future occasion. Kauri gum has risen about a pound per ton. The Chamber of Commerce waited on Mr Bryce to-day to urge him not to remove the Native Lands Court from Auckland. He said the Department must be moved, in order to give Ministers control over it, but the registry and all necessary documents would be left in Auckland. At the meeting of the Board of Education to-day the tender of Hazard, £187, was accepted for erection of a teacher's dwelling at Mercer. The Rangiaohia committee forwarded an account for £49 for repairs to school and dwellings. An application for a range for the teacher's house at Kirikiriroa was granted. The Te Awamutu committee were authorised to clear the school ground out of the school fund.

Delegates sent from Germany to Canada to report on the advantages of the Dominion as a field , for settlement have just returned after a journey through Canada and Manitoba and the North west.
