CAMBRIDGE TOWN BOARD.
r*^- * — ;—; — • The usual monthly meeting of the above board was held in the Town Board office, .Lake-street, Cambridge, ,on Tuesday ' evening last. There were present : — Messrs T. Wells (chairman), Hewitt, Kirkwood, Johnson, Nixon, and the en- . gineer. The usual preliminary business being disposed of a communication was received from King Tawhiao invitipg the public of Cambridge, through the chairman of the board to his great meeting in May next. It was agreed to acknowledge the same on behalf of the public. . . A letter was received from Messrs • Hesketh and Richmond; as solicitor's for Mr Francis • Rose, the -' proprietor , of i the Masonic Hotel, Cambridge; claiming - £300 for damage sustained to, his property by the action of the board r in I lowering the footpath.— The chairman said"
the natter was at present in the hands of the board's solicitors, and receiving every attention. A letter was received from Mr Maurice Keesing, solicitor, on behalf of the Rev. MrWhytock, drawing attention to the dangerous state of Grey-street. It was agreed to let the matter stand over for the present. A letter was received from Mr Wm. Macfarlane, asking the Board to form a passable track to his property, as the present road was something dreadful. A tender for the work from Mr Finaghty, who agreed to make the track for 245, accompanied the letter.— lt was agreed to accept Mr Finaghty's tender for the work. The chairman laid The Waikato Times' report of the deputation to the Premier on the table, and asked leave to have the same placed on the minutes of the meeting, as the report was a full account of what took place, and was substantially correct. — Granted. Attention was drawn to a defect in the formation of Grey-street. —Mr Hewitt enumerated the bad points in the work. There was one place in the vicinity of his gate anything at all but finished. The contractors were paid for making a good job of the street, and consequently they should be made to finish it properly.— Mr Gwynneth was perfectly satisfied with the manner in which the contractors had finished their work. The men, he thought, had done their work well.— Mr Hewitt would not give a certificate for such work. — Mr Gwynneth said that if the board were not satisfied with his services they could dismiss him. He objected to Mr Hewitt going on to the works and interfering with the men.— Mr Hewitt thonght'the board had a right, if the work was not done to their satisfaction, to complain. —Mr Gwynneth Btated that Mr Hewitt had been continually complaining about the street, interfering during the progress of the work, and giving instructions to the men, which he had no business to do. He would inform the board that while he held the position of engineer he would not tolerate Mr Hewitt or any other member of the board giving orders to men under his charge. There was a resolution on the books that no one was to interfere with the surfacemen but the engineer, or the chairman in his abseuce, but in the face of this Mr Hewitt was perpetually giving orders.— Mr Hewitt explained how the matter had arisen which gave him occasion to complain. The work which he wished the men to alter he was going to pay for himself, and consequently lie considered he was doing good instead of harm. He did not want anything at the public expense. — Mr Kirkwood thought that when an engineer was employed, Mr Hewitt had no business interfering iir the work. — Mr Gwynneth thought it was a great nuisance to have members of the board interfering with the work, as they were liable to incur more expense. On the motion of Mr Nixon, it was resolved that tenders be called for the gravelling of the following streets :— From Ryans farm, town belt, to Karapiro bridge, Duke -street West, Brewery, Alpha, Lake, Chapel, Kirkwood, Queen, Bryce, Grey, and William-streets ; the same to be advertised in Tito Waikato Times, and to be received until 6 p.m. on Friday, the 31st inst. ; total quantity about 2500 yards, which may be let in two or more contracts. It was resolved that the board meet the engineer on Thursday, the 23rd, at 9 a.m., for the purpose of deciding where the gravel for roads will be taken from. Mr Wrights account, for £2 13s 3d, was passed for payment. This \i as all the business.
