Mr Lionel Phillips, Auckland manager for Ehrenfried, captured an old gaol bird who had been prowling about his premises and had alarmed the servants. The Rev. Mr Laubret, incumbent of Kawa Uawa, was thrown from his horse and severely injured, but is recovering. Judge Fenton proceeded by train to Waikato, in order to make enquiries respecting the feasibility and expediency of holding a Land Court at Mokau. Cable despatches in the Australian papers show that the Canadian Government, at the solicitation of Sir Henry Parkes, have agreed to introduce a bill in the Dominion Parliament next session abolishing all duty on Australian and Ne-v Zealand wools. A line of steamships from Montreal to Australia, via New Zealand will also probably be started. The criminal calendar for the Supreme Court on Monday week comprises the following cases : — Michael Ryan, indecent assault ; Te Ropihi, horsestealing ; Grove Vowless, cattlestealing, six cases ; Frederick Gough, larceny, four cases ; Charles Alexander Martin, receiving stolen property ; James McCouslly, larceny ; Mikare Te Papa, manslaughter ; Thomas Simms, alias Simpson, alias Brigstock, forging and uttering ; Joseph Merrick, arson ; Geo. Bennett, larceny ; W. McLean, Rape ; Rachael Volan, bigamy ; W. Hare, horse stealing,' two cases ; Same, maliciously wounding a horse ; Elizabeth Dairah, bigamy ; James Bloomfield, burglary two cases ; Margaret Philips alias Watt, larceny ; this, makes the last of 27 offences preferred against 16 persons, the number of cases however deems likely to be brought up to 30 be- , fore the end of the month. Harry Hull, railway porter, Helensville, , received intimation to-day- from Melbourne that he had been awarded the certificate of the Humane Sopiety for his gallant act in saving the wife of Constable Naughton from drowning on the 9th September last,
