S. PATRICK'S BAY.

The anniversary of the patron saint of Ireland was celebrated in various parts of Waikato with the usual sports and entertainments, the day being observed almost aa a general holiday. The banks and solicitor's offices, and most of the business places were closed, and the bulk of the population gave themselves up to recreation. In Hamilton there were no sports or amusements, but the residents patronised those at other places; the steamer Delta taking a' contingent down to see the regatta and Ngai-uawahia sports, Races were held at Piako and' at Kihikihi, while at Cambridge the memory of the good saint was kept green by a musical entertainment, in which the best local, and some good foreign talent was engaged. The weather was fine> jtl 3put somewhat hot. Below we give some particulars of those events, reports of which have reached us :—: —

Ngaruawahia Sports. Notwithstanding the counter attractions at Piako, Kihikihi, and Rangiriri, there was a veiy fair attendance at the Ngaruawahia sports yesterday. The steamer Delta with the Hamilton Band on board conveyed between 50 and 60 visitors. Although the entries were not numerous they events were very well contested. Hubble Race, 120 yards, 10 flights. First prize, 40s; Second, 10s. Three entries. Brennan , 1 Gibbons ' ... 2 Reid 3 Trotting Match, about 2 miles. First prize, £5 ; Second, Riding Whip. Five entries. Shaw's Bob 1 Coleman's Blink Bonny ... 2 Somers Venus 3 This race was easily won by Bob. Running Long Jump. Four entries. Odium 1 Moore 2 Ngaruawahia Handicap. 100 yards ; 150 yards ; 200 yards. Decided by points. First prize, £5 ; second, 20a j third, 10s. Four entries. 100 yards. Gibbons, 9 yards 1 Davis, 3 yards „2 Jones 4 yards 3 Brennan, scratch ... ... 0 150 YARDS. Gibbons, 11 yarda ... , ... 1 Davis, 4 yards, ... ... 2 Jones, 44 yards ... ... 3 200 YARDS. Gibbons, 15 yards 1 Davis, 5 yards...' ... ... 2 Jones, 5 yards 3 Gibbons securing first prize easily, Davis the second, and Jones third. Brennan did not compete after the 100 yards race, as he concluded the handicapping had put him out ot any chance of winning. JAIR- oared race. First prize, £4. Three entries.
