ALEXANDRA.

There were not many natives at the funeral of Tawhiao's child who was buried on Thursday last, Tawhiao having discouraged them from doing so, it not being a settlement at present. A number of our settlers including some ladies, went up. Tawhiao fully appreciated the good ieeling, and received them most courteously, and thanked them for the respect shown to him by attending. He is having a very large Maori-built house or whare erected for himself, and several others are already fiuished and occupied by the natives. Tawhiao with his sons proceeded to Kawhia on .Saturday to see how the fishing is going on. He is expected back in the course of the week. A great many of our settlers are much dissatisfied with the Government for not allowing the service of a boy for carrying telegraph messages, as it is a great inconvenience having to wait outside the building, frequently for a considerable time, while the officer in chargejs absent delivering messages. As the ofne'e^pes not open for money order business after 4 o'clock it not unfrequently happens that a settler having come several miles to transact his busiuess has to leave without doing so. It is to be hoped that the department will see its way to allow a messenger before the native meeting comes off, or there will be great inconvenience to the public at large.— (Own Correspondent, March 13.)
