THE TRIP OF THE DELTA TO WAIKATO HEADS.
On (Saturday last the steamer Delta, in charge of Captain Cellum, left Cambridge en route for a pleasure trip to Waikato Heads. Not so many patronised her as was anticipated, probably, so far as Hamilton was concerned, from &o many of our citizens having visited the seaside at Raglan earlier in the season. After picking up a few passengers at each of the townships on her way down, the Delta was detained at Mercer for about an hour, awaiting theanival of the late train from Auckland, with Mr W. S. Laurie and party. This raised the total number of passengers to about forty ; the official element of the W.S.N. Co. was well represented in the persons of Captains Lindsay and Souter, Messrs Bradley anil Laurie, directors. The steamer left Mercer at half-past seven, and the passengers had a most enjoyable trip down river. The night was warm and moonlight, and the absence of mosquitos enabled them to remain on deck and admire the picturesque scenery of lower Waikato, with its numerous islets and densely wooded banks. On Sunday morning, the sea being beautifully calm, a trip over the bar in the Delta was- proposed and carried out, more particularly to satisfy a ship-owner, one of the party, who has vessels frequently trading to the port, as to the safety of the harbor. After a cruise of about an hour the vessel returned, and different parties set off in various directions, some for a bath and others in quest 6f shells and seaweed. The arrangements for the personal comforts of the passengers .being under the immediate supervision of Mr George Dennis, the providore for all the company's steamers, was all that could be desired. The steamer had to wait for the tide on Monday night, and did not leave the Heads till 9 p.m., and, owing to delays on her journey and falling foul of a sandbank abreast of Tuakau, she did not reach Cambridge till near 11 p.m. on Tuesday. Everyone was delighted ,with the trip, and if the excursion had been set on foot earlier in the season a much larger number would haVe availed themselves of it. Another matter, it would be well if, > when advertising, the company had stated for what amount accommodation' could' be secured at • Waikato Heads, as this is a very essential consideration : wheh women- and ' children form a large proportion of the party.
