COMPLIMENTARY CONCERT TO MR T. A. BELL.

The complimentary concert to Mr Bell, which came off at the Volunteer Hall last night, must be considered to have been a success, in a musical no less than a financial sense. The attendance was very fair, the front seats especially being well filled, and what is of more importance, those present thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment provided for them. The arrangements were very good, and considerable credit is due to Mr Bell for the smoothness which characterised the whole of the proceedings. We have no intention of criticising the various items in the programme, but we may be excused if we indicate in the briefest manner those pieces which to us seemed to afford the greatest amount of pleasure. The overtures on the pianoforte by Mrs Ross- Watts, Misses Newell and Sandes, and Mr A. j. Hunter were finished performances, and fairly won the applause accorded them. Of the solos, those by Miss Allen and Mrs Gard, Messrs Moore and Moreton were particularly noticeable, and in the first three instances a recall had to be responded to. The duet, "Harp of the Winds," by Mesdames Ross-Watts and T. G. Sandes, and "Ring on, Sweet Angelus," by Mrs Ross- Watts and Miss Allen, were finished performances, and were duly appreciated at their true value. The comic element was supplied by Messrs Tonks and T. G. Sandes, both of whom contributed in a great measure to the enjoyment of the audience. Mr S. E. G. Smith recited Rogers' "Ginevra " The accompaniments were played by Miss Newell, and Messrs Bell and A. J. Hunter.
