PATEA, Last Night.
The s.s. Wakatu, Captain Gregor, when proceeding coastwards on Saturday afternoon, failed to answer her helm, aud drifted astern of the breakwater. The blades of the propeller were broken, and she was carried out to the end of the breakwater and washed outside of it, with three feet of water in the hold, two of the port plates being torn by the bumping. Her cargo, amounting to about ten tons for Wangunui, was taken out somewhat damaged. At high water the seas were breaking over her. Hopes are entertained that at spring tide she can be got off; if not, she will be repaired and launched over the breakwater into the river, as the Jane Anderson was. The Wakatu was built at Nelson three years ago, and is 70 tons register. She is insured for £5000 in the South British, and reinsured in the United, National, and the Union. The principal owner is J. S. Cross, of Nelson.
