THE WAIPA-RAG LAN ROAD.

Our Raglan correspondent writes :— The expenditure of the £600 grant, which was made by the Government for the benefit of that portion of the Raglan and Waipa road which lies betwixt the Waitetuna bridge and the Raglan township, is now being proceeded with under the supervision ot the Karioi and Whaingaroa road boards. It is evident from the character of the work being done, that both boards are exercising their best judgment in expending the money in such a manner that no fault may be found with them hereafter. Commencing at Waitetuna bridge is the work being done by Bishop and Co. Their contract is a large one, and from appearances I should imagine that they are making creditable work and using dispatch in its performance. It is mostly formation and is not being done before it is required. I next notice that Mr Leahy has been making the rough places smooth about Okete. Further on in the Karioi district, near the Ruapuke junction, Mr Vercoe is busily at work, and although his contract is not large, the benefit of the improvement he is making will be none the leas appreciated. Jerome and Co have just completed the next section, which leaves that portion of the road almost as well aa could be desired. The Karioi Road Board contemplated a considerable deviation here, but wisely I think for the present have still further improved the old road. Ward and Charleton will no doubt feel glad that their work is finished. Although the same quickness may not have been used it its performance as was done in some of the other contracts, it is fully compensated for by the quality of its workmanship. The last section is in the hands of a Maori named Rawhiti, who appears to be determined not to be excelled in the style of his work by his white brethern. I believe all who know this district will agree with me when I say that the change wrought in this road by the execution of the works just enumerated is wonderful. Travellers from Waikato have for a long time complained of the bad character of the road from Waitetuna to Raglan and I am certain the alteration now made in it will meet with sincere approval.
