Wellington Races.

First Day. Thursday, the first clay of the Wellington Summer Meeting, was an undoubted success. The weather was everything that could be desired, and the attendance when the Cup was run for was between two and three thousand. The Governor, Lady Gordon, and suite were amongst those present. The course was in excellent condition, and the rain overnight made the going first-class. The Guards' Band performed selections on the lawn during the afternoon. The totalisators were well patronised, about £1,818 being put through during _the afternoon, the best dividend being that paid over Hilda for the Cup, Thirteen backed Hilda at £2, and the dividend was £36 12s each. Robinson's Salvage, 2yrs, 6st. 61bs 2 Mr Bates' Poet, 4yrs, 6st. 121bs. (including 51bs. penalty and 31bs. over weight) 3 Lady Emma, Sir George, Piscatorious, and King Quail also started. It, was a grand race up the straight between Salvage and the winner, the former having the best of the struggle until 20 yards from, home, when Hilda got level, and getting the stride at the post just secured a head verdict.
