THE CAMBRIDGE RAILWAY.
At the meeting, yesterday, of the Waikato County Council, Cr. Wells asked if anything new had transpired in regard to the branch railway to Cambridge ; *nd Cr. Runciman in replying, said the survey was being proceeded with at a ridiculously slow rate. He did not believe that half a mile had been done since their last meeting. The engineer was generally away in some other part of the district, and during his absence' the men seemed to do absolutely nothing. The work was commenced fully two . months ago, and he did not believe that there were more than three miles surveyed. Mr Wells considered the whole thing was absurd, and expressed his belief that the object of the authorities was to aljkyw the vote to lapse. They were promised that tenders for the formation should be invited so soon as the first six miles of line had' been surveyed. He 'thought!, tkcy should communicate with the membewkwp^. the district without delay, or they woukr lose another year. If the Government ■was unable to find men' there were plenty of competent surveyors and engineers in the district who could carry out the work. He' was deputed by the Cambridge Board to see Mr Whyte, and he thought the Council should follow. A resolution in accordance with Mr Wells' suggestion was carried unanimously.
