TAWHIAO'S VISIT TO AUCKLAND. [BY TELEGRAPH.]
Alexandra, yesterday. — Our correspondent wires :— Tawhiao, his sons, Major Mair, Wahanui, Manuhiri, and some fifty followers, left Alexandra this morning by train for their Auckland and Northern visit. Tawhiao will not return to Waikato for a month. Auckland, last night. — Our correspondent wires : — Tawhiao's reception committee met in the Chamber of Commerce room when the following telegram was l read by Mr J. M. Clark :— " Alexandra, Monday. — Tawhiao and party, numbering about 53, started by tram this morning. In consequence of preparations made at | Orakei, Tawhiao purposes staying there till Thursday." It was resolved that the Mayor and Dr Campbell meet Tawhiao at Green Lane this afternoon at about 4 o'clock, and there make arrangements for his reception in Auckland on Thursday, instead of Tuesday as previously intended. The sub-committees are convened to meet at 11 to-morrow, when final arrangements will be entered upon. Tawhiao is accompanied by about 40 of the principal chiefs of the Kingite party, many of whom have not visited Auckland since the Taranaki war of 1860. Tawhiao will visit the scene of his former residence and the burial place of his ancestors, and after the reception and banquet in Auckland, will go to Kaipara to meet the northern tribes at Reweti. The movements of the king's party are, however, dependent on the length of their stay in Auckland. Tawhiao comes as guest, and will in a great measure consult the wishes- of his European entertainers as to future proceedings.
