OPENING OF KING COUNTRY, [BY TELEGRAPH.]
Waitaba.— Our correspondent wires :—,: — , The proposed meeting, of settlers to consider the question of application of, natives for a Land Court at Mokau and the opening of the, country between this and Auckland has been postponed for the present. The Taranaki Herald; in a leader on the subject,' doubts the honesty of the Native Office, ," who would keep, the country, closed till doomsday." ,It says: "From past' history nothing is easier to induce natives like Tawhiao and , Eewi to favor delay in opening the country, and write letters if necessary to , that effect." It hopes the Auckland members will form a political union with , the rest of the North Island members, ' and insist on the opening, of thif country and completion of the trunk railway ;as essential to the' progress 1 of the island, and adds that if Government does not i show diligence in dealing with the matter a remedy lies in a change of Ministry in fovor of one that is able and willing to take a direct course. - I
