TAW HIA O'S VISIT TO AUCKLAND. [BY TELEGRAPH.]

Our correspondent ■ wires f : — A public meeting of -citizens, convened by the Mayor, for the purpose of taking the necessary 'steps to suitably receive and entertain Tawhiao on the occasion of his approaching visit to this city, was held in the Insurance Buildings this (Friday) afternoon. About 20 gentlemen were present Messrs Dufaur and Stodart were appointed joint secretaries. The Mayor then moved : " That it is desirable that the citizens of Auckland should give a fitting reception to lawhiao and his followers on their visit to the city." In doing so, he referred to the importance which he attached to this visit as marking the termination of the sullen attitude and isolated lite of the king natives, and as showing a disposition on their part to mix more frequently with the European neighbours. This advance and relations of good feeling should be encouraged. In England the news of this amicable position of the two races would be hailed with great satisfaction, while here the people would recognise ita value as tending to assure the peace of the country. The motion was seconded by Dr. Campbell and carried.' Upon the proposal of His Worship, the gentlemen present, viz., the Mayor and Messrs Cosgrave, Dil worth, Pierce, McMillan, Hull,, Aickin, Lamb, Dufaur, R. M. Clark, T. B. Hill, T. Morrin, W^dcl/ancTOffer were appointed a committee to carry out the objects of the meeting, and decide what form the reception should take. Messrs Chambers, Aickin, Hill, Hull, Waddel, Nathan, Carr, and Offer, were delegated to canvass for subscriptions. Dr. Campbell and Messrs Morrin, Lamb, and Cosgrave were appointed a committee to provide for the house accommodation and victualling of the expected guests.
