A large Liberal meeting was held this evening at Birmingham. Mr Johu Bright and Mr Chamberlain, two of the members for the borough, were presented with lengthy addresses. The former in the course of liis speech alluded to England's foreign relatious, and stated that even if the country was without allies, there was no Power" that had more friends. In reference to Irish affairs, Mr Bright justified the policy of coercion which hail been pursued in that country. Mr Chamberlain also referred to the state of affairs in Ireland, and stated that there was already a decrease of fully 40 per cent, m November of agrariau outrages, and the position was decidedly hopeful. He ridiculed the idea of landlords being compensated for the reduction of rent. Obituary: William Harrison Amsworth, novelist, aged 77.
Washington', January 3 The trial of Gaiteau coutiuues. The defence of the prisoner is now being proceeded with.
