Canoe Race. Renga ... ... ... ... 1 Weteni 2 There was great excitement among the Maoris over this race, which was contested with great earnestness. Sailing Rack.— 3 miles. Ist prize £3 : second £1 5s ; third ss. Philp's Taniwha 1 Rawiri's Julia 2 McGillivray's Elvira 3 Tami'sPuhoi 4 Loane's Te Akau 0 The start was a good one except in the case of the Te Akau, the Taniwha getting well away. The Julia, however, came up, and taking the wind from the leader secured first place. Coming round the first tiny the bo its were well together, but it was evident that the contest lay between the Taniwha and Julia, and they finally cama in in the order given above. Pair-oarkd Sculling Rack. 1 mile. Ist prize 20s. S. Vercoe in Taniwha ... 1 F, Savage in Amelia 2 R. Loane in Elvira 2 Thin race was a hard struggle between Vercoe and Savage. Pulling Race. — Ist prize £3, 2nd prize JEl5s. H. Johnston and Bishop ... 1 ( S. Vercoe and J. Galvin ... 2 R. Loane and F. Savage ... 3 This was won easily, though a struggle ensued for second place. Small Canoe Race over 3 flights of hurdles.— lst prize 20s, 2nd prize 15s. Ronga 1 Hori :. -. 2 Although Horis canoe capsized going over one of the hurdles, he managed ;to right it, and came in a good second. This race was very amusing. Swimming Match.— Prize £1. Bishop 1 Tommy (native) 2 The Duck Hunt was won by Mr Beaman, who caught his man easily, the duck being quite exhausted.
ATHLETIC SPORTS. A programme of land sports succeeded the regatta, and proved to be of almost equal interest, the events being contested with spirit. Mr W. Duncan filled the post of judge, and Mr S. Wilson acted as starter. The first was 100 Yards Men's Maiden Race.— lst prize 12s, 2nd prize amount of entrance. Kingi 1 T. Cameron 2 Hooana 3 R. Loane 4 This was a capital race, Kingi running very well. 200 Yards Handicap.— lst prize, :Vj& j 2nd prize, amount of entrance./' c >A. Wallis (scratch) ... ... 1% T. Cameron (3yds) ... "...
