The Rev. Y. Lush, the new incumbent of S. Peter's, Hamilton, conducted divine service in that church for tbe first time on Sunday. There was a very large congregation at both morning and evening services.

The resignation of Lieut. Johnson, Hamilton Troop, Waikato Cavalry, will be felt not only in the troop but in the regiment, of which he is one of the

smartest officers. No one has done more to incroase the efficiency of the men under his command, and this, together with his many excellent social qualities, Will cause him to be greatly missed.

The polling for the election of Mayor of Hamilton takes place to-morrow between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Considerable interest appears to be taken in the contest, which promises to be very close.

The weather during the past few '^ays has been very agreeable to the farmers, whose fears of a drought have now •leen overcome. Since Sunday evening there has been a succession of light thunder showers, which have had an extremely refreshing effect upon everything.

The Hamilton Public and volunteer Hall will be opened to-morrow night with a concert, in which many of the leading local amateurs will take part The entertainment is to be followed by a dance. We anticipate that there will be a large attendance.

A footrace for £10 a-side, between K. Deverin aucl Harry Lane, distance one mile, came off last Saturday in a paddock opposite the Railway Hotel, Frankton. There were not many persons present. At 5 o'clock Deverin " toed the scratch," giving his opponent 10 yards Upon the signal being given, Lane dashed off and kept the lend till the last round, when Deverin passed him and won easily.

Our Alexandra correspondentwrites yesterday: — "There has been little doing in the township these last few days. The Ngatihaua natives are 3till busy with their planting. Tawhiao has gone up to Kopua. I saw him on Friday last; one of his eyes is still closed, and the other is very weak."

A correspondent writes :— " lam given to understand that SSir George Grey hag expressed a wish that Mr Gresham should be chairman of his public meeting in Hamilton on Friday next. A meeting of those interested in ananging for the usual Boxing-day sports ot Hamilton East was held at the Waikato Hotel a few days ago, Mr G-audin in the chair. It having been reported to the chairman of the Hamilton West School Committee that ringworm prevailed among the pupils, Mr Gvvynne, accompanied by Dr. Carey, proceeded yesterday to examine the children, but after a cat ef ul inspection the doctor, as will be seen from the subjoined report, only discovered one case. There h, therefore, not, .13 was feared at first, any necessity for closing the school, though it is of im portance that the child referred to should be isolated. The chairman desires us to suggest to parents the desirableness of keeping at home any child suffering' from sickness of any sort, so as to prevent, as much as possible, tho spreading of any disease such as ringworm. The following is Dr. Careys report : — "I have this day, at the request of the chairman of the Hamilton West* School Committee (Mr C4wynne), inspected the whole of the children, boys and girls, and find them all looking healthy, and free from any contagious disease with the exception of one little girl, who appeared to be suffering slightly from ringworm of recont origin, whom I have recommended to be kept from pchool attendance. — J. Carey, L.R.C.P., M.R.C.S."
