R.M. COURT, CAMBRIDGE. Thursday. —(Before Captain Jackson, R.M., and Colonel Lyon, J.P.)
Alleged Breach of Licensing Act. Abraham Isaacs, storekeeper, was charged iyith selling two gallons of brandy tok native named Ware Taka on Sunday, the #3rd October, at Okoroire. Mr Speed appeared for the defendant. The Magistrate, on the case being brought forward, said that there was no offence committed under the 38th section of the Licensing Act 1871, under which the information was laid, which, he held, applied only to publicans' licenses and not to wholesale licenses, and on these grounds dismissed the case.
Drunkenness. Thomas Bruce, charged with being drunk while in charge of a horse, was fined 10s and costs (7s).
i Criminal Libel. * The case of Granville v. Ripley, for criminal libel, was again brought forward. A number of witnesses were examined, and the defendant was committed to take his trial at the Supreme Court. Bail was allowed, himself in £100, and two sureties in £40 each. Bondsmen not being forthcoming, accused was lodged in the lock-up, but bail has since been found. A number of civil cases were also disposed of.
