MR JOHNS' CANDIDATURE.

TO TIIK EDITOR. Sib,— A disclaimer from the Liberal party iv this place was sent to the editor of the Wadato Mini, contradicting a gross falsehood which appeared in the editorial of that paper on the 9th inst., stating that the Whitaker party covertly assisted the bringing out of Mr Johns to represent the Liberal party in Waipa. That disclaimer was sent in the interest of truth, and not aa an electioneering squib. The Mail refuses to insert it, and in their notices to correspondents refers to it " as an emanation from some idiotic person, who ought to be relegated to the Whau. " Now, sir, it is useless to throw pearls to swine, even in the caiise of truth, for he who wishes to be its champion mivt be prepared to receive abuse, but I canuofrhelp thinking, Mr Editor, that there must bo something very low in that man's natare to first injure, then insult. Had it appeared as a letter, no notice would have been taken of it, but being an editorial the editor must have known that the allegations contained therein were grossly untrue. I beg, therefore, through your columns, to give the assertion a most emphatic denial, and have no doubt but that Mr Whitaker and his party must have felt just as much frieved at the untruthful statement. Mr ohns was brought out simply on the merits of the cause he represents, and it mast be rather a " forlorn hope" with the Major when, to bolster tip a waning cause, " bis following descends to glaring falsehoods of this sort. 1 A free, pure .Press is a nation's safeguard, but I am afraid that wave of freedom and purity has not yet. reached the Mail by a long way yet, —l am, &c, P. CoeboY^ i P|tniltoD, November 16th, 1881.
