NARROW ESCAPE. [BY TELEGRAPH.]

From Opunake yesterday, an Association wire reports : — A narrow escape from a fatal accident occurred at the Opunake hotel last night. A person, under the influence of drink, entered a room where three or four gentlemen were asleep. Seeing a rifle lying in a corner, lie took it up, and, while examining it, it exploded. Mr Armitage, formerly of Wellington, but now of Hawera, was asleep close to where the discharge took place, and a quantity of the grains of powder entered bis face, but, fortunately, it struck the iron at the head of his bed, which turned its course otherwise. Mr Skeefc and Mr Hadfield (native inter* preter) vould have been seriously injured if not killed.
