THE LATEST. UNPUBLISHED TELEGRAMS.
The Stco's correspondent reports last night from Pungarehu :—■"Yesterdayafternoon was devoted to settling camps and erecting redoubts. The men were under arms yesterday at one, when Bryce told Col R.oberts to dismiss them, and he rode to Opunake at once. Thi3 movement causes a good deal of surprise and speculation in camp. The arresting company of tLe constabulary are a fine body of men from Rahotu. They entered Paiihaka, but the natives will not disperse. They say they know Bryce wants them to strike the first blow, but Te Whiti tells them that no matter what indignity they suffer, they are not to raise a hand, even if the shirt is taken off their backs. The Armstrong gun frighted some of them. The Taranaki natives are quite lively. The girls are skipping and the men laughing. Wi Parate is still there. Major Kemp sent a letter to his tribe to leave Panhaka, but they would not receive it. Park, of the Hutt navals, received a sunstroke, and another officer in that camp fainted yesterday. Thesmall cap is much condemned. Numbers of men are walking about with faces as if just out of a prize fight, from the effects of the sun. I visited the camps yesterday. The Thames Scottish and Navals are getting comfortable for tentlife. Nelson men complain about the tents. No doubt they are wretched coverings, but there ia no grumbling in any corps, although the men are sorely tried. After a scorching 1 day on Monday the Wellington engineers had to hand over tbeir great-coats, wet as they were, to the men of another. corps who were going on guard. Te Whiti and Tohu are both cheerful. The native 3 sly the arms collected' yesterday are only pig son guni- Fighting guns if they haya any ■aye evidently planted, ' ■ i - -
