SPORTING.

The Melbourne Cup. (BY CABLE — OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Melbourne, Tuesday. The weather to-day was beautifully fine, and over one hundred thousand persons ■weir present at Flemiugton. The, grand stand presented a very 'animated appearance, and the lawn in front was besieged by the " fair i-ex,'' who sauntered leisurely up and down in gaily-attired colors, fairly Oiit-stiipping in style and fashion the effoit of previous years, thus showing that every year the Cup in becornin-r more and more popular. The Hill was densely packed, whilft the fl.it and river were also largely patronised. Of eouise, the great event of the day was the Cup, and as the day wore on, the excitement became more and more intense. The public interest seemed centred in the favorites who were heavily backed, and tlie idea of an outsider winning wai never dreamt of. Punctually to time the bell rang for tho Cup of 1881, and aa the horses left the saddling paddock, they were each in their turn sci utinised by their admirers. Both the New Zealand horses looked in splendid condition, and were greatly fancied, but Darebin and Waxy had the lion's share. Mr Ivory had declared to win with Sweetmeat, but his declaration failed. Zulu was not even hacked by the owner, and the trainer was surprised, and as he swept past the judge's box two lengths in advance of The Czar, the onlookers seemed spell-bound, and could hardly realibe the fact, until the numbers went up that Mr C. McDonnells 4-year-old colt Zulu had won. The bookmakers were delighted.
