THE KARAPIRO BRIDGE.
At the last meeting of the Wa.ik*to County Council it was agreed on the motion of Mr Wells to set aside a sum out of moneys accrued and to accrue to the riding of Cambridge sufficient to re-con-struct the Kar.ipiru bridge, on the second or less expensive plan submitted by the engineer of the Town Board, Mr G-wynneth. It was felt that the sum voted, £4:50, would not be enough, but Mr Wells and the other Cambridge representatives were of opinion that the excess would be provided by the local bodies most interested. The action taken by Mr Wells vai con°equent upon an intimation received from the member for the district that the Government was not likely to make a special grant for the work. The arguments adduced by the member appear, however, to have borne fruit, notwithstanding-, one of the engineering staff of the Public Works Department, Mr Sealey, being at present engaged in taking sections and making plans for a new bridge over the creek, with approaches, &c. The bridge possesses less of a local character than that which span" the Waikato river in its immediate vicinity, forming as ifc does a part of the main road through the island. The completion of the Rotorua road this summer will increase the traffic five fold, and the Government have no doubt recognised the fact.
