RAGLAN.
+ Were your correspondent a penny-a-liner his letters might not be accepted as gospel. In this quiet spot there is so little really worth recording that he might be tempted to draw sometimes upon his imagination. He might occasionally startle you w : th a native outbreak, or a terrible tra/edy, and thus gain an unen viable notoriety. But; not being tempted by filthy lucre he stays down in the region of fact, and consequently has little to write about. The chief topic discussed now is thp general election. Everybody wants t<i know everybody's opinion as to the eligibility of the candidate* for senatori il honours. Ido not think Major Jackson will obtain many Raglan votes. As regards the other candidates, the opinion seems to be equally divided. Wo have a new boarding-housr*. It- is kept by Mr W. Powell, and i-i for th<* accommodation of visitor*. This ought to be an inducement to Waikato people to visit us during the summer, and (ret the benefit of sea bathing and the bracing southerly wind. Two hotel* and a board-ing-house; no lack of accommodation now. On Friday last a young man named James Millar was brought into Raglan suffering, apparently, from sunstroko. All that nisrhr he lay at the police station without speaking With eyes fired upon the ceiling, and with body occasionally convulsed, he presented a humiliating appearance. As soon as possible, our worthy constable had him conveyed to Hamilton for medical treatment. On Saturday, our traffic raonoploy came to an end, Within half-an-hour, the s s.'e Hannah Mokau and Rowena arrived here, the latter for the first time. The result is a reduction in the rates of carriage from £l per ton, and per pas^eng-er to 12s 6d. Both steamer* carry at this rate. Thie reduction will prove a boon to exporters and importers. Our produce will be put into the Auckland market for less than £1 per ton. ' The Hannah Mokau took back with her abtmfc 20 tons of limestone, the consignment of Messrs Ellis, who are making laudable efforts to establish that branch of commerce.— (Own Correspondent, Oct. 24th, 1881.)
