ALEXANDRA.
Tawiiiao and Rewi'a people are still busy putting in potatoes here. They have now twelve ploughs at work in the township and Mangapiko. Mr Wright, surveyor of the Government, sent up to survey the road to Maugauika Creek and Buahine, where the king is residing, reported that the most economical route was on the west side of the river, but Tawhiao lias set his mind on a bridge above the falls on to the east side, that he could drive his buggy (such is now his ambition) straight into the township. Ou Friday last Tawhiao informed me that the bridge was promised him by the Government, but on Saturday Mr Wright received instructions to go on with the survey on the west side of the river. Tawhiao and Rewi were much put out with this, and told Mr Wright to never mind. If the road was not to go on the east side, they did not want one at all. So for the present the matter rests. To-day Mr McLean, with some of the Ngatihaua natives, between whom there is some land dispute, are expected here, when Tawhiao, Rewi, and Wahanui (if the latter comes m the township to-day) will hear and decide about the matter. — (Correspondent, Oct. 17th.)
