Conservative Demonstration. London, October 12. A banquet took place at Newcastle-on-Tyne last night under Conservative auspices. The Marquis of Salisbury, Sir Stafford Northcote, and other leaders of the party were present, and spoke on the occasion. The Marquis of Salisbury in his speech referred to the state ot affairs in South Africa, and stated he was confident the Government would again have to "eat dnfc" m the Transvaal. Sir Stafford Northcoto spoke on the question of England's commercial relations with other Powers, and repudiated the idea that the Conservatives favoured the adoption of a policy of protection.
